The John Vane Academy

John Vane Leadership & Management Scheme

About the Scheme

The JVA is delighted to announce a new initiative, offering bursaries to attend leadership and management training courses.  We are working with a couple of accredited training providers in London to empower our early career researchers with vital skills when moving to more senior roles like team leader or lab manager.

We hope this training will create even more effective teams and confident leaders for the next generation of researchers at FMD institutes.

The Training

We have identified the following excellent 2-day courses which we invite applicants to choose from:

Line Management Training Course (Aspire Leadership)

Essential Management Skills Course (MTD Training)

Eligibility

You must meet the following requirements to be considered:

  • be a postdoctoral researcher or other early-career researcher* who has recently taken on a leadership role or will do so in the next few months,
  • work at one of the institutes within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London AND
  • be primarily involved in one or more of the following fields of research:  cardiovascular disease, inflammation or endocrine disorders (meeting WHRF's charitable purpose to support medical research in these specific areas)

* For the purposes of this scheme, we welcome applicants who are in a research environment and would benefit from improving their leadership skills.  A PhD or medical degree is not necessarily required.

How to Apply

Review the details of both training courses currently on offer (links above).  If you feel you are an ideal candidate for this scheme, please send an expression of interest to the WHRF Programmes Manager, Mrs Amanda Craddock, at a.craddock@qmul.ac.uk.  Please include the following, using no more than 600 words in total:

  • Details of your current role (and future role if you are not yet in a leadership position)
  • Your preferred training course from the above options and why this best fits your needs
  • Describe how this training would be beneficial to you as well as to your institute
  • Your preferred training date(s), keeping in mind that arrangements may take a few weeks if you are successful
  • A statement of support from your line manager, confirming that they are aware of your application and the requirement to attend two full days the training venue.  Please attach to your email at the time of submission (this letter will not be included in the overall word count).

This is an ongoing programme with potential to send several successful applicants each year.  As such, there is currently no deadline for submissions.
