We want to make sure our members are aware of the free services available to them through the Advice and Counselling team at QMUL. PhD students and Staff have access to a range of free mental health support and we encourage you to use it when you need it.
The below list was provided by the Student Experience team; all are free to use and can be accessed through a self-referral form on the students AskQM account. Additional services are available to postdocs and other early career research staff.
Counselling
- Confidential, non-judgmental emotional and psychological support through short-term talking therapy or cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) informed therapy, group therapy and supportive groups including 8-week PhD support group facilitated by a group therapist.
Mental Health Advice
- Mental health advisors offer guidance and support to students struggling with distress and/or mental health difficulties. They offer crisis intervention, psycho education and advocacy, working collaboratively with internal and external services.
Wellbeing Advice
- Practical support and strategies for issues that impact on day-to-day life and overall wellbeing such as stress, sleep, time management, loneliness or transitioning to university.
Sexual Assault and Harassment Advice
- Free, confidential and specialist support for students affected by any form of sexual violence including rape, sexual assault & sexual harassment, intimate image abuse and stalking & harassment whether it happened now or in the past. Not sure if it "counts"? Come talk to us anyway.
Welfare Advice and Advocacy
- Advice and advocacy on a range of practical, financial and welfare issues including funding studies and hardship funding; budgeting and managing money; student finance and tuition fee issues; changes to studies; welfare benefit and debt advice.
Immigration Advice and International Support
- Advice, guidance and representation relating to your student visa requirements and conditions including working, immigration for your family members, travelling and re-entering the UK and general support for international students in the UK.
Specialist support
- For students who are estranged, care experienced, asylum seekers and refugees, carers, at risk of domestic abuse, at risk of/experiencing domestic abuse, at risk of/experiencing so-called ‘honour’-based abuse (including forced marriage), parents, disabled.
